新旧の空間を並列させ、新旧を往来する住まい
静岡県富士市、日常の風景に富士山が見える温暖な場所で、築４５年木造住宅の部分改修を行いました。室内の改修範囲はＬＤＫ、ユーティリティ、玄関、そして応接室で、屋外は外壁と窓廻り、そして一部デッキテラスを設ける改修を行っています。述床面積は５３坪の平屋ですが、内部の改修範囲は約６０平米（１８坪）となっています。この範囲は常に使っている場所でもあり、床が所々たわむようになったのがリノベーションのきっかけでした。その他の部屋（寝室、和室続き間、子供部屋、廊下等）、また屋根瓦は既存の状態も良く、窓以外は既存のまま残すこととしました。住まいの中心を貫く廊下は、拭き掃除を長年行った飴色の板間、ジュラク壁と化粧天井が、特にクライアントの思い入れがある場所であり、廊下をそのまま残し、それに並列に新しい空間を配置することとしました。
戸建て住宅のリノベーションは、解体して多くの問題が発覚することがありますが、今回は築４５年にもかかわらず、土台、大引、柱の根元も腐食やシロアリ被害はなく、躯体はまったく問題がありませんでした。考えられる要因として、風通しをよく暮らしていたことと、断熱材が無く結露が発生しにくかったことが挙げられます。部分改修ということもあり、一部の範囲の断熱材充填は、逆に結露を誘発することが懸念されることから今回の改修でも断熱材は入れない選択としました。新しい空間は、既存で食堂と和室の間にあった壁と柱を撤去して、梁を補強しながら洋間の一体空間としてＬＤＫとしています。また、バストイレなどのユーティリティはレイアウトを変えて全てつくりなおしました。浴室はガラスの壁とし、既存と対比したモダンな造りとしています。また改修範囲に新設した木製建具や枠、床材等の仕上げは、白木のクリア塗装として、既存の飴色になった木部とあえて対比しています。このように、新しい空間や素材を、古いそれと並列させることによって、視覚的にもおもしろく、また新旧の空間を行き来しながら暮らす感覚は、部分リノベーションならではの楽しさであると考えました。
新しい木部も経年で色が移り変わっていき、何年後かに見る新旧の対比は今と少し違った見え方になります。その移り変わりも楽しみになります。

A home that crosses between old and new
In Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture, a warm location where Mt. Fuji can be seen in the daily scenery, we carried out a partial renovation of a 45-year-old house. The interior renovations were to the living/dining/kitchen area, utility room, entrance hall, and reception room, while the exterior walls and windows were renovated, and a deck terrace was installed in part. The floor area is 189.2 squer maters, but the interior renovation area is about 60 squer maters. This area is always in use, and the floor started to sag in places, which was the trigger for the renovation. The hallway that runs through the center of the house is a place that the client was particularly attached to, with its amber-colored wooden floors, Juraku walls, and decorative ceiling that have been wiped clean for many years, so I decided to leave the hallway as it is and place a new space parallel to it.
When renovating a detached house, many problems can be discovered after demolition, but in this case, despite the house being 45 years old, there was no corrosion or termite damage on the foundation, joists, or base of the pillars, and there were no problems with the structure at all. Possible reasons include that the house was well ventilated and that there was no insulation, so condensation was unlikely to occur. As this was a partial renovation, I decided not to add insulation in some areas as I was concerned that adding insulation would actually induce condensation. The new space was created by removing the existing wall and pillars between the dining room and Japanese-style room, reinforcing the beams, and creating a unified Western-style space as a living, dining, and kitchen. In addition, the layout of the bathroom and toilet were changed and all the utilities were rebuilt. The bathroom has glass walls, giving it a modern look in contrast to the existing one. In addition, the finish of the newly installed wooden fixtures, frames, flooring, etc. in the renovation area is a clear coat of white wood, which deliberately contrasts with the existing amber-colored wood. In this way, by juxtaposing the new space and materials with the old ones, it is visually interesting, and I thought that the feeling of living while moving between the old and new spaces is a fun thing that only partial renovations can offer.
The color of the new wood will also change over time, and the contrast between the old and new will look slightly different in a few years from now. I’m looking forward to seeing how that changes.
