「明るさ」と「広さ」
敷地約50坪、延床面積約50坪の地上2階木造住宅です。クラアントの要望は、庭と一体となった明るく広いLDKと、各個室、書斎、ゲストルームを広く確保することでした。
「明るさ」と「広さ」が命題でしたが、その感覚は個人的なものであり、その感覚を探る事から始めました。
元々の住まいを体感し、それに対するクライアントの意見を聞き、面積に対する広さの感覚と空間の明るさの感覚を把握しました。その上で、当方が設計した住宅を実際に体感してもらい、面積や窓の大きさ以外の空間の作り方による明るさや広がりへの効果、具体的には、生活上主な視線方向に窓がある事、窓に対して壁やカーテンが邪魔しない事、窓の先に見える景色、天井から突出するものがない事…等々設計による効果を体感してもらいました。
明るさや広さは身体的感覚なので、計画案を作成した段階ではCGよりも模型で確認してもらいました。その上で、お互いの感覚を概ね合わせられた計画である事を確認して進めました。
具体的計画は、都心では貴重な広い庭と室内との関係性を主に意識して設計しました。
リビングから伸びるデッキテラスは、リビングの天井に合わせた高さまで伸ばしたRC壁を併設し、防火設備を回避した大きなフロートガラスのサッシとして、テラスを内部の延長としている。また、1階と2階からもシンボルツリーが見えるようにし、季節や時間の移り変わりを楽しめるようにすると共に、近隣マンションからの視線の意識をその木に向ける事と、木の背景にもなる道路側に設けた目隠しのRC塀がプライバシーを確保している。
内部は、LDKには子供達が勉強できるようにスタディコーナーを設けていますが、LDKの矩形から外に出し、シンボルツリー正面として専用の窓を設ける事で、一体空間の中でありながら個別の領域をつくっています。クライアントの強い要望より設けたLDKの本棚は、縦桟のない水平の固定棚として、上下に間接照明を入れリビング空間のメインの設えとしました。
住宅の設計において一番重要なのは、クライアントと同じ方向をみて感覚を共有しながら進める事だと思います。今回はその事をクライアント自身も意識して頂けた事により、結果的にクライアントの満足する住まいの実現へと導かれました。

“Brightness” and “Spaciousness”
This is a two-story wooden house with a total floor area of 169m² on a site of 170m². The client’s request was for a bright, spacious living/dining/kitchen area that blends seamlessly with the garden, as well as ample space for each private room.”Brightness” and “spaciousness” were key concepts, but since these are personal perceptions, I began by exploring them. I experienced the original house, listened to the client’s feedback, and understood the sense of openness and brightness. After that, I showed the client the house I designed, and they experienced the impact that spatial design other than area value and window size had on brightness and openness. Specifically, I showed them the design effects, such as ensuring windows are positioned in the main line of sight, ensuring that walls and curtains do not obstruct the view beyond the windows, and ensuring there are no protruding objects from the ceiling. Because brightness and spaciousness are physical perceptions, I had them confirm them with a model rather than computer graphics when I created the first plan. After confirming that the space sense was largely in sync with each other, we proceeded.
The specific plan was primarily designed with consideration for the relationship between the spacious garden, a rare find in urban areas, and the interior. The deck terrace extending from the living room is fitted with a reinforced concrete wall that extends to the height of the living ceiling, and large glass sashes making the terrace an extension of the interior. Tree is also visible from the first and second floors, allowing them to enjoy the changing seasons and time of day. This tree also serves as a visual barrier for the neighboring apartment, and a screened reinforced concrete wall on the road side, which also serves as a back wall for the tree, ensures privacy.
Inside, a study corner has been set up in the dining room, so that the children can study. However, by extending it outside the rectangular area and installing a dedicated window facing the tree, it creates a separate area within a unified space. The client had a strong desire to have a bookshelf in the living area, but what I proposed was not a regular bookshelf, but a fixed horizontal shelf without vertical bars, with indirect lighting above and below, making it the main feature of the living space.
I believe the most important thing when designing a house is to move forward while sharing the same vision and sensibilities with the client. In this case, the client was conscious of this, which ultimately led to the realization of a home that satisfied the client.
